Surfaces

Dragonfly wings—mother of pearl
etched with charcoal and pine,
finely transparent above

the buoyant bluegills, suspended
below flowering lily pads
with azure and emerald
scales, each a tiny gem,
glimmering
in the dark
nibbling
cold.
