Seen a Heron Standing There
beside its perfect dark water
reflection
so still
you can’t determine
which way to hang the picture.
They are there, at Stumpy Lake,
below the grizzled pine and gnarled oak,
where the reverent water holds
schools of fish inches from the surface.
One stands blue on a sloping birch,
its sinewy neck an elongated S
dipping into the mirror.
