Eying Gypsies at Huatulco Beach
When David kicked sand
in the face of the sleeping gypsy,
no words were spoken—
just a look.
The gypsy closed one eye,
and turned his face blue,
holding his breath until
his open eye bulged
like a single white egg
trapped in a round carton.
He staggered toward David,
who backed away into the surf,
and all at once
the gypsy took
one great breath,
and David was gone. In his place,
only a boulder remained.
A rounded remembrance
of the bully, David.
