About this site

From 2001 to 2026, this address was home to the 9-11 Memorial Quilt Project’s website. In 2026 the stewardship of the domain changed, and the website was updated so that the project’s story, and the names of the hundreds of people who stitched for it, would not disappear from the web.

The project’s story

An illustration in the spirit of the project’s quilts.

The history, the timeline, the press coverage and the full list of stitchers come from the project’s own published updates, preserved by the Internet Archive, and from newspaper coverage at the time. The facts are theirs; the wording is ours. The photos of the squares come from the project’s own online album, also recovered from the Internet Archive. Each is credited to the stitcher who made the square, and we’ll take any photo down on request.

Quilting guides and patterns

The project was made by quilters and stitchers, and the people who still find it are often planning a quilt of their own. So we publish free quilting guides and patterns, starting with the kinds of quilts the project made: memorial quilts, patriotic quilts, quilts for veterans and keepsakes made from a loved one’s clothes. Every pattern is our own design, with cutting charts and diagrams worked out by calculation. We haven’t sewn a sample of every one, so if you find an error, please tell us and we’ll fix it quickly.

How the site is paid for

The 9-11 Memorial Quilt Project is an emotional one, for the people who stitched for it and for us, and we don’t want to cover it in advertising. So there are no banner ads or pop-ups here. Some quilting pages have a few links to tools and materials on Amazon that the instructions actually call for, and our gift guide for quilters links to the tools it suggests. We earn a small commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. Memorial and history pages carry no product links at all. See our privacy and affiliate disclosure.

Corrections and removals

If you stitched for the project and your name, state or quilt is wrong, contact us and we’ll fix it. Every effort is being made to preserve the historic significance of this project, though we will respect credible requests to remove a name or photo. If you know where the five quilts are today, we would love to hear from you.

The project was helped by several businesses and donors; see thank-yous.
